Paddle Pal game assets, character animations, level design and trailer I made for our Experimental game
Duck and Penguin characters
For the characters for our paddle game we decided to go for a family friendly aspect so we looked at party animals for inspiration. As you can see from these images I decided to make a duck and penguin character on 3ds max, I then rigged and skinned these characters so they could be animated to dance in the background, as well as being a playable character so that when the player the switch controller the characters follow the motion the player is moving. For the texturing I did a high to low poly bake so that the poly count wasn't to high but also had a good level of detail, I then unwrapped the characters and used substance painter to texture them so they could be put into the game to make the game look prettier and more colourful to fit the overall theme of the game.
For the environmental assets I made multiple trees and rocks, the trees where only 100 polys each apart from one which was slightly higher as it was a more detailed tree. The reason I made low poly trees was because it fitted the overall game aesthetic as well as being able to render properly in unity since there is a lot of trees are they are an important background asset to have. These trees and rocks where all modelled in 3ds max and textured in substance painter.
Some other assets I made where bigger assets to make the game look more populated and gave it a sense that this game felt alive. The boats and Chinese moon bridge where in the game so that the players had to get around them without hitting them since they had a box collider on them so that if the player went into them they would get knocked back. The fishing cabin, well and Chinese moon bridge where all made on 3ds max using high to low poly baking as the game would run better and most of the detail such as wood planks and bricks could be baked on to give the model more visually appealing and detailed without actually having the detail on the model instead the high bake over the top would give the model more detail using normal maps when put into unity. These models where then unwrapped and textured in substance painter to look more realistic when they are put into the game.
As you can see once I put these game assets into the pond level that I designed, it gave the level a sense of feeling alive with all models having the same astatic to them. These assets also where made in a way to be more child friendly and visually appealing to children as they are our main target audience since there is no violence in our game, as well all the assets are very bright and colourful with ducks and penguins which are known as harmless cute animals.
Finally after I made all these assets, character models and animations I the put them into the game and made the trailer. The trailer was made to show off all the fun things you can do in our game such as collect items to benefit the player as well as collecting the eggs so you can knock the enemy in the water to win the game or be knocked of and lose. This trailer made the game look enjoyable and fun by adding cartoony texts as well as cartoony game music with a funny cut off at the end to show the viewer how fun the game would be when playing it. I made the trailer in Premier Pro using in game footage.
